Organisation

Of course there's more to do than lending books and answering questions:
these open source programs that are used in the library: how did they get there ?
And the Gimp, an image manipulation program and more important Moodle,
an open source Virtual Learning Environment with many interactive possibilities.
How come we got started with that ?........... How come I can unblock ?

In any school two policies should drive ICT : System- and Information policy.
In Information Policy teachers, students and the librarian (the users) are represented. As long as these two parties get along and are not struggling over pieces of territory, you've got a good policy going and you can see new developments and start using them for the benefit of the students and teachers.
In our case: some ten years ago the chairman of the ICT workgroup asked me to succeed him. In the workgroup the ICT system administrators are represented, the teachers and the pupils. That group of people advised the leadership five years ago to switch towards Linux /open source.

On the right you see the ICT workgroup of this moment: (from r. to l. Hans Schoonheim (Biology teacher, representing the teachers), Evan van Hooren, system manager and me, the hitchhiker, eh....I mean librarian, representing the students.

"Web 2.0" and our school

Interoperability
www.deutschlernnet.de is used for learning German. On this very big interactive website teachers and students can find many presentations about actual subjects. After seeing a film for example students can anser questions about that film or they can find grammar exercises.

Communication:
Our students are playing a game called "The Island" with students in New York. In that project our students and those in New York will learn about history. How were New York and Amsterdam in the starting days of New York ? The medium for communication here is a forum in Moodle.

Collaboration
a Wiki is perfect for that since more students than one can collaborate within a Wiki. There is a Wiki project for the first classes. Groups of three students make a presentation about a kind of animal. This also a case of information sharing (like the previous ones).

and In Holland Linux / open source is a hot issue at the moment. As a means of communication, we've used leraar24, (teacher24). In this site teachers can see films about many subjects that are related to edcation, they can give a judgement as well.

A different example: at this moment a website is in the air (www.lezenvoordelijst.nl) where teachers and librarians can mention the titles that make up literature in Holland.
The 200 titles that were selected, were also divided in six different levels. The way students read is also divided in six levels. So slowly a list appears of titles appears + their description.
When you hear which book was appreciated by a certain student, you you have a tool to find out what the next one can be.

So we do have projects where " Web.2.0" comes up and Information literacy as well (although it's not always visible).
But these characteristics.........they will be back !.....
